Where To Stay in the Kingdom of Navarra

 Hotel Churrut

There are a number of small, charming boutique hotels in Navarra where one can get away for a few days a peace and quiet, yet still be close to the action.  One of our first discoveries a few years ago was this delightful 18-century family home turned into a small boutique hotel in Vera de Bidasoa, a prosperous village in northwestern Navarra on the Bidasoa river not far from San Sebastián-Donostia, just off the N-121A if driving to the coast from Pamplona.  The frontier with France, the Pays Basque, is only twenty minutes away following the old smugglers’ route that leads through a pass in the Pyrenees to the beautiful village of Sare.  The famous witches’ caves of Zugarramurdi are also near by.

The house is a beautifully decorated manor house with 18 spacious, comfortable rooms and suites with large bathrooms, some with jacuzzi tubs, and balconies overlooking the garden, or large terraces.  The décor in each room is different in keeping with the style of a family with a rich history, and all are adorned with memories, antiques and paintings that have been in the family for generations.  There is also a small exercise room on the top floor, a glass walled gallery/breakfast room with wicker furniture on the ground floor, an elegant living room/library, a small garden as you enter the property.

The gourmet restaurant Lenkonea, housed in a former blacksmith/carriage house, offers a 30€ Bidasoa menu, VAT included, from Sunday to Thursday evenings. The Menú Lenkonea, 35€, VAT included, is served Friday nights, Saturdays and Sundays.

Northern Navarra

Other get-aways in Navarra include upscale properties like the 5-star, adults only, Arantza, which is located in the mountains about a 1 hour drive southeast of Donostia-San Sebastián or 1-1/2 hours drive north of Pamplona, just off the 121-A.

Southern Navarra

Notable options in southern Navarra would be the Aire de Bardenas Hotel, the unique escape located just outside of Tudela and the Hotel Restaurant Bodega Pago de Cirsus, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees and with sweeping views of the Sierra del Moncayo near Ablitas. Both are located about an hours drive south of Pamplona and not far from Alfaro in the Rioja Oriental.
